With Easter here, you might be wondering such things as:
- How does a bunny lay eggs?
- Local. Free range. Organic. Pastured. What does it all mean?
- How long will a hard-boiled egg last?
Keep reading to find out the answers!
1. How does the Easter Bunny lay eggs?
Since his official retirement on April 1, 2014, the Easter Bunny no longer produces his own eggs. Instead, he contracts with chicken farms around the country to fulfill Easter egg orders.
In a statement released by his publicist, the Easter Bunny said, “I only works with farms that allow their chickens to live happy, healthy lives on pasture.” According to the Easter Bunny, that means that eggs produced on conventional chicken farms can not be used to make TRUE Easter eggs.
In an interview with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, the Easter Bunny also said he does not consider plastic Easter eggs to be real Easter eggs.
*It should be noted that April 1 is also April Fool’s Day.
2. Local. Free range. Organic. Pastured… What does it all mean?
Most eggs produced in the US are produced by hens living in conditions that are nothing short of horrific. You can read more about that here if you’re interested. We don’t support these sorts of production practices and hope you won’t either.
“Local” means something different depending on who you ask. To us, “local” means within a short drive of San Diego.
Technically, the label “free range” just means that a chicken has access to the outdoors. It doesn’t mean the chickens can go outside any time they want, and it doesn’t tell you how big the outdoors space is or whether the outdoor space provides actual foraging potential.
Certified organic eggs are raised on organic feed, which is richer in nutrition and doesn’t contain synthetic pesticides. There are also various humane standards required for an egg producer to become certified organic, but the certification doesn’t currently guarantee that the chickens spend a lot of their lives foraging outdoors.
“Pastured eggs,” under certified humane standards, means the chickens spend their lives outdoors foraging (yes, this is how chickens are supposed to live).
In our opinion, the best eggs you can get are local, certified organic pastured eggs. This means you’ll support local farmers and humane living conditions for the chickens while also getting the freshest, healthiest, tastiest eggs possible!

3. How long will a hard-boiled egg last?
Did you boil pastured organic eggs to make your Easter eggs? Trying to figure out how long your boiled eggs will last? The answer: up to 7 days in the fridge or up to 2 hours at room temperature (less if it’s hotter than room temperature).
